About this place
Gathering around a sizzling teppan griddle for okonomiyaki and monjayaki while enjoying fresh fish and hot pots like in an izakaya is what makes Iwafune in Bunkyo Ward's Mukogaoka distinct. While well regarded as an okonomiyaki parlor, visitors frequently mention the impressive quality of the seafood and side dishes, creating an easygoing rhythm where sashimi and teppan cooking share the table.
Plentiful Teppan and Batter Specialties
The griddle menu spans classics such as pork and squid pancakes alongside beef tendon with scallions, and the lavish Iwafune Special Okonomiyaki loaded with squid, octopus, shrimp, and scallops. Monjayaki options are just as diverse, starring the Iwafune Special Monja with spicy cod roe, bay scallops, sakura shrimp, and squid, alongside comfort-food favorites like mochi cheese or pork curry. Sizzling sides such as buttered scallops and cheese potato with bacon round out the griddle spread.
Fresh Fish and Warming Hot Pots
Alongside the griddle fare, the kitchen serves seafood including namero tartare and the Isomori sashimi assortment, featuring shellfish, striped jack, and tuna. Guests can also choose from hot pots, such as the miso-based seafood Iwafune pot, the soy-sauce-based Oki pot, and seasonal monkfish hot pot in winter, offering comforting warmth on colder evenings.
Sipping highballs, beer, or a refreshing biwamin sour over hot pots and savory pancakes makes for an unpretentious dinner. Operating in the evenings from 17:00 to 23:00 six days a week (closed Mondays), the restaurant serves as a reliable local spot for friendly gatherings and leisurely evening meals.
